Backwards Forwards Back 2024

As the Soldier, Bess Miller swaggers convincingly across the stage but lets us see the brittleness behind the facade...It’s a tense buildup. The Soldier paces, scoffs, casts a backward glance at the headset, averts their gaze. Paces faster, talks louder. We can sense where this is going. It’s animal....

Miller’s performance embodies the frantic physicality of trauma, which may begin in the mind, but lives in the body– in adrenal glands and racing heartbeats, and screams ripped straight from the gut.

That’s where the Soldier begins.

The always-electrifying B.C. Miller, an HST repertory player, portrays the young Claire as a wide-eyed, free-spirited waif whose sexual appetite plays havoc with Mary and Percy’s marriage...Miller as Claire is a delight, sexually brave, light hearted with an impeccable sense of comic timing and an important counterpoint to Mary’s intellectualism. B.C. Miller — Hudson Theatre Works’ female* Hamlet in 2020 — does make an impression as Helen’s cartoonish defense attorney (complete with penciled-on mustache), played broadly to epitomize the impotence of the legal system. NJ Arts

*This review is so kind - but I just want to note that I'm non-binary and the Hamlet that I played had he/him pronouns as per the script.

Also in the mix are Oscar’s flighty and vulnerable wife Birdie (the brilliant HTW ensemble player B.C. Miller) and their irresponsible, immoral son Leo (Mikey Miller) ... NJ Arts

Hamlet

As Hamlet, Bess Miller wrestles with all of the doubt, desire and determination to avenge his father’s death. But we hear it, and we see it. When I compare Ms. Miller’s performance to the infinite number of Hamlet’s I’ve born witness to, she is the one who opened the doors to the language for me most clearly. She is an actress we root for, and though Hamlet is a prince, he is as buffeted by life as any one of us. When she says, “Now, I am alone,” she actually is alone on stage as well as alone within the play. We are drawn in, we sense the duality, always the duality. Open Box Arts

Bess Miller (the heartbreaking Sonia of last season's Uncle Vanya) brings finely tuned and at times ferocious irony to bear on the title role. Peter Borten

The four-part presentation opens with the introductory remarks of Bess Miller as the company Emcee, whose speech is a witty combination of Shakespearean language and quotations with post-modern techie lingo and commands to Alexa, and whose costume synthesizes a current lab coat with an Elizabethan-style ruff, breeches, mustache, and goatee. She makes it laughingly clear that the evening’s acts are works in development DC Metro

Bess Miller ... delivers a particularly pleasant and energetic performance as Helena. Onstage Blog

Macbeth

[The] Three Witches are marvelously intense creatures, homeless, filthy and psychologically astute as they use superstition and flattery to make their points to Macbeth and other characters in the play. Vivien Landau, Alyssa Diamond and Bess Miller are believably old friends who combine witchcraft, sorcery and superstition with folksy dances. They are both humorous and frightening. Theater Pizzazz
